Leonard Peltier, one of the surviving leaders of the American Indian Movement (AIM), was given two consecutive life sentences in 1977 following a disputed conviction. Free Leonard Peltier documents AIM’s activism in the 60s and 70s, the event that sent Peltier on the run, and the many generations who have been fighting for his freedom since he was imprisoned. This story is a tutorial on the array of injustices perpetrated on Native people: genocide, stolen land and abandoned treaties, forced assimilation, and rigged incarcerations. Told through archival footage and interviews, Free Leonard Peltier is an essential history of violence against Native Americans in the US.
