Debut, or, Objects of the Field of Debris as Currently Catalogued

A fictional documentary, Julian Castronovo’s debut feature follows a young filmmaker, played by Castronovo himself, investigating the mysterious disappearance of an art forger. Through scanned images, found footage, digital re-enactments, and nighttime Photo Booth diary entries all masterfully woven together with a haunting voiceover, the film is transfixing just as it is funny. Castronovo fuses nonfiction and fiction, commenting on the ethics and aesthetics of forgery and inventively leading viewers down a rabbit hole of conspiracy and paranoia.
