Barbara Forever

Directed by Brydie O'Connor

Opened by Corpus.

Barbara Hammer started making films when she was 27 years old. At the time, she was still married to a man. Filmmaking led her to feminism and feminism helped her discover her sexuality, and in 1970, Hammer came out as a proud lesbian and began a long, prolific career of experimental filmmaking authentic to the lesbian experience. Hammer’s visually rich, sensual films were groundbreaking—she wasn’t afraid of her sexuality. She reveled in it. In a documentary true to the rebellious spirit of its subject, Barbara Forever incorporates present day interviews with archival footage and excerpts from Hammer’s work, celebrating Hammer’s journey as a lesbian and a filmmaker who followed her passion while being largely unrecognized by the commercial art world for decades.
