I Only Rest in the Storm

Directed by Pedro Pinho

“Would you benefit from the creation of the road?” Sergio, a Portuguese environmental engineer, asks this question to locals in Guinea-Bissau where he has been dispatched to research a construction project that will connect cities to rural villages. The answer only becomes more muddled as Sergio immerses himself into the local scene, navigating friends, lovers and daunting co-workers whose encounters consistently challenge Sergio’s postcolonialist liberal mindset. Portuguese filmmaker Pedro Pinho intertwines the threads of several differing perspectives into a playful, messy, epic ball of drama examining the effects of colonization on contemporary Africa.
