Prickly Mountain and My Design/ Build Life

Directed by Allie Rood

This screening is followed by a Q&A with director Allie Rood.

“When my sister and I grew out of our rooms and needed more space, my dad gave me a hammer and said, what are you waiting for?”

Mad River Valley Filmmaker Allie Rood grew up in the Design/Build architectural movement. In 1963, a group of young architecture and sculpture majors at Yale University, inspired by Bauhaus, began to think outside of what traditional architecture could be. At a time when it was rare for architects to also be a part of the building process, Design/Build emerged on Prickly Mountain in Warren, Vermont. An ethos that implements working from discoveries rather than drawings and designs, Design/Build is more about jazz and improvisation than planning and utility. These inspired architects constructed a series of buildings that still exist today and created a philosophy that continues to shape both lives and architecture in Vermont. In a Design/Build world, your home and your journey does not have to be confined to four walls but can include an infinite number of possibilities.
