Mahjong
Directed by Edward YangCast: Chang Chen, Kaizo Hayashi, Lawrence Ko, Tang Tsung Sheng, Virginie Ledoyen
Previously unavailable to watch, this new restoration of Taiwanese director Edward Yang’s (“Yi Yi,” “A Brighter Summer Day”) atmospheric masterpiece proves it’s one of the best films in his already impressive oeuvre. When a corrupt Taipei businessman goes into hiding from the mob, he sets forth a chain reaction involving his son, the hoods going after him, and two dozen other characters that frequent the same trendy nightclub. Precariously balanced between screwball comedy and violent tragedy, MAHJONG expertly weaves in and out its characters’ lives, exposing the plots and power struggles inherent in modern prosperity.
